Megha Gupta, Laxmipriya Dei

Abstract

Recurrent abortion is defined as a sequence of three or more consecutive spontaneous abortion before 20 weeks of pregnancy. This distressing problem is affecting approximately 1% of all women of reproductive age. The risk increases with each successive abortion reaching over 30% after three consecutive losses. According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), between 15–25% of all pregnancies are affected by recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL). The present treatment in modern science includes use of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) injection, progesterone in oral, vaginal or injectable form with bed rest. In Ayurveda, Asrija and Putraghni Yonivyapad are mentioned as repeated abortions in which Doshas responsible are Vata and Pitta. Kashmaryadi Ghrita is mentioned in Asrija, Raktayoni, Putraghni Yonivyapad by Acharya Charaka and Acharya Vagbhata in the form of Uttara Basti. In the present case study, Kashmaryadi Ghrita was given orally at a dose of 10 g twice a day with milk for two months in a female of 27 years of age fifth gravida with history of three abortions after one live baby of seven years with threatened abortion in the present case and sonography showing gestational sac of average seven weeks with subchorionic haemorrhage of 2.24 * 3 cm size. The drug was found effective in preventing abortion leading to continuation of pregnancy and resolving haematoma also.
