Gyanendra kumar Gupta, gagan devi

Abstract

Ayurveda is a practical science that deals with physiological and pathological status of human beings. Acharya of Ayurveda has classified the elements of the body under three fundamental components—Dosa, Dhatu and Mala. For the existence of the human body, there are two elementary requirements—one that forms the anatomical structure and second which forms the physiological unit. Among these, Dosa and Mala are principle physiological components. These two elements are not structurally stable. The basic structural architecture of the body is formed by Dhatu. They are the most stable constituents of the body. Dhatu bear and nourish other constituent of the body and responsible for the existence of the human body. They act as recipient for all the function taking place in the body. Though the basic elements are categorised under these three groups but some elements are left which are not defined. Acharyas found it difficult to attribute their function to former one. These specialised group of elements are termed as Upadhatu.
