Effectiveness of communication chart on patient satisfaction among conscious intubated patients: A randomized controlled trial

Abstract

OBJECTIVES

Lack of communication among intubated patient frequently described in literature as major problem. The main thrust of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of communication chart in improving patient satisfaction among conscious intubated patients.

METHODS

Randomized control design was employed using non-replacement lottery method to allocate 30 subjects in each control and experimental group. Ethical approval was obtained by the Ethics Review Committee of hospital.  Data were collected at pre-intervention and after 4 days of intervention, using patient perception scale for satisfaction.

RESULTS

Patient satisfaction score was significantly higher in experimental group with considerable increase of gained score. Moreover, significantly higher number of patients in experimental group i e. 97% reported high satisfaction level while 93% of the patients in control group reported moderate satisfaction. Therefore, use of chart significantly improves patient satisfaction.

CONCLUSION

Communication chart is found to be an effective measure in increasing patient satisfaction by facilitating communication between health care provider and conscious intubated patients by providing the patients opportunity to express their needs, thought and feelings.
