Abstract

Asthma is a common disease worldwide with significant ethnic and regional variation and increasing morbidity and mortality as well as health care burden from asthma has been recognized lately. Asthma is one of the major causes for discomfort and death. Due to its chronic characteristics, it is one of the major concerns nowadays. The present study’s objective was “to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching program on knowledge regarding home care and management of asthma among asthmatic clients” in a selected hospital at Amritsar. A quasi-experimental research study with research design of pre-test and post-test with experimental and control group (no randomization). The sample size for the study was consisting of 60 patients in civil hospitals of Amritsar. Samples were selected with purposive sampling technique. A self-administered closed ended structured questionnaire tool was used for the collection of data. The result of the study shows that there was significant difference in the mean post-test score. The findings reveal that in experimental group, mean score of pre-test and post-test knowledge of asthmatic clients regarding home care and management is 12.1 (SD + 2.2) and 19.9 (SD + 3.6) respectively. Post-test mean score was higher than the pre-test mean score. The ‘t’ test value is 17.5 which was significant at 0.05 level. In control group, mean score of pre-test and post-test knowledge of asthmatic clients regarding home care and management is 11 (SD + 2) and 11.1 (SD + 2.02) respectively. Post-test mean scores and pre-test mean scores were almost same. The ‘t’ test value is 2 which was not significant at 0.05 level. Hence, it is concluded that the structured teaching program was effective to increase the knowledge of asthmatic clients. This study recommends that a similar study can be undertaken on a larger sample to generalize the findings, Studies can be done on knowledge and attitude regarding home care and management of asthma.
