Abstract

Modernization, affluence, science, and technological development leads to still more sedentary lifestyles, which lead to many disorders in which obesity is considered as a multifactorial disease. The World Health Organization (WHO) recognized obesity as one of the most serious public health problems of the 21st century. Obesity can be defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health. Obesity is a physiological, psychological, and social disorder, commonly caused by a combination of excessive food intake, lack of physical activity, and genetic susceptibility. Women are mainly affected as compared to men. In Ayurveda, obesity is correlated with Sthaulya and Medorog and also categorized in Santarpanjanya Vikaar (over nourishment of body). Modern science treatment includes dietary changes, physical exercise, and other drugs which has their own side effects. But Ayurveda is a ray of hope and is frequently sought by the public. Ayurveda consists of daily internal medications, doing fasts in the form of a light diet, exercise, and Shodhan Chikitsa which comprises of Panchakarma therapy, which is the most effective, safer, and better cure of the disease. Based on the hypothesis, the present study was conducted on the basis of inclusion and exclusion criteria after inspection of 40 patients in two groups that is, Virechana Karma and Dhanyamla Sarvang Dhara. Treatment was given for 60 days along with a follow-up period of 30 days. Patients were assessed on the basis of subjective and objective parameters. Both the interventions were almost equally effective in some parameters, but Dhanyamla Sarvang Dhara had better results than Virechana Karma in the overall improvement of the patients.
