Gagging and Management
Abstract
One of the challenging situations where prosthodontists skills and knowledge are put to test is management of a patient with pronounced gag reflex. A disruptive hypersensitive gag reflex is stressful, frustrating and embarrassing both for the patient and for the dentist. It proves to be barrier in delivering adequate and quality dental treatment. Gag reflex is a complex, physiologic protective phenomenon designed to protect the upper airway and the oropharynx. This paper is a descript review of the etiologic factors and various management and clinical techniques and strategies to aid a clinician in managing the patients with such an exasperating reflex.
