Factors Affecting Residual Ridge Resorption: a Literature Review
Abstract
Residual ridge is a term used to define the shape of the alveolar ridge after healing of bone and soft tissue after tooth extraction. Patients suffering from long-standing edentulism commonly suffer from this incapacitating problem, especially in the mandible. As it causes physiologic, physical, and economic problems to patients, the cause of ridge resorption needs to be identified. Residual Ridge Resorption is a progressive, irreversible disease, as a result of multifactorial origin. Resorption occurs in the alveolar process and the basal portion remains intact. The size and density of the basal portion decrease due to reduced muscular function activity. This study aims to assess and evaluate the factors affecting the rate of resorption and the various other reasons affecting resorption.
