Abstract

One of the standard measures in the prevention of enamel demineralization is the use of Fluoride. Fixed orthodontic attachments act as a retentive area for plaque accumulation that leads to development of white spot lesions (WSLs). Incorporation of fluoride into adhesives for bracket bonding inhibitsdemineralization during fixed orthodontic treatment. However, the addition of fluoride into orthodontic adhesives may affect the mechanical properties such asshear bond strength (SBS). The present study was aimed to determine the SBSof self-cured and light-cured fluoride releasing adhesive used for bonding metal and ceramic brackets and its mode of failure site. One-way ANOVA was applied for analysis followed by Tukey's Posthoc test to find statistical significance between and within the groups. A p-value (P<0.05) was considered statistically significant. There was a significant difference in mean SBS values between the groups; light-cured ceramic brackets (LC-C) showed the highest SBS (24.60.6) and least for self-cured metal brackets (SC-M). Type of bond failure causes damage to the bracket, or increased chances of enamel fracture are highest for LC-C group. Ceramic brackets are aesthetically superior to metal brackets. The use of fluoride-releasing composite in any form shows clinically acceptable SBS.
