Periodontal Regeneration: Histological Perspective

Neha Mahajan, Vandana Kharidi Laxman

Abstract

Periodontitis involves an inflammatory process of bacterial origin, affecting the periodontal tissues and provoking the destruction of the supporting tissues to the teeth. The ultimate goal of periodontal treatment seeks to preserve the teeth in relatively functional and comfortable good health, and at the same time maintaining the aesthetic expectations of the patient. The rationale for most of the therapeutic procedures is “regeneration of periodontium”. Periodontal regeneration can be assessed clinically or histologically. The clinical methods of evaluating periodontal therapy are periodontal probing, examination of radiographs, and re-entry procedures. Histological evaluation is the only reliable method to determine the true efficacy of periodontal therapy to determine the true efficacy of periodontal therapies aimed at creation of a new attachment apparatus consisting of new cementum, bone and periodontal ligament. The present paper reviewed the histological studies pertinent to periodontal regenerative procedures.
