Medical Treatment of Central Giant Cell Lesions of the Jaws

Alaa S. Mohmed, Yousif I. Eltohami, Ahmed M. Suleiman

Abstract

Central giant cell lesions (CGCLs) of the jaw are benign, non-neoplastic intraosseous proliferative lesions of an osteoclastic origin and an unknown etiology; their conventional treatment is surgical enculeation and curettage with a reported recurrence rate of 15–20%.

Because of the inherit problems with the surgical approach (recurrence rate, surgical defect, disfigurement, loss of function, and GA associated morbidity) alternative medical treatments have been proposed over the last 15 years with promising results; these options include intralesional steroid injections, interferon alpha, systemic steroids, calcitonin, bisphosphonate, denosumab, or combination therapy.
