Self-esteem among Nursing Students
Abstract
Self-esteem is a personal opinion of oneself and is shaped by individuals’ relationships with others, experiences, and accomplishments in life. A healthy self-esteem is necessary for mental well-being and a positive self-concept. Total of 118 nursing students from three different colleges at Bangalore were surveyed with socio-demographic data, Rosenberg self-esteem scale and students stress scale. The study shows that more than half of the subjects i.e., 65.3 percent had normal self-esteem where as 22.9 percent had low self-esteem and 11.9 percent had high level of self-esteem. Chi square test reveals that there is statistical significant association between gender and self-esteem. It shows that more than half of the subjects had normal self-esteem where as 22.9 percent had low self-esteem and 11.9 percent had high level of self-esteem. Chi square test reveals that there is statistical significant association between gender and self-esteem (χ2 = 7.918, p = 0.019). Overall levels of self-esteem were normal in the study sample of nursing students.
