Development of High Sugar Induced Hyperglycemia or Type 2 Diabetes in Zebrafish (Danio rerio) Model
Abstract
Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is the most common form of diabetes, accounting for about 90–95% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes in adult. It is mainly recognized by an increase in blood glucose levels, i.e., hyperglycemia. Earlier, zebrafish (Danio rerio) has been already used for the study of various metabolic diseases. In the present study, a validation study was done for the earlier developed acute hyperglycemia zebrafish model by using only water–sucrose rich diet to establish optimal hyperglycemia. Hyperglycemia was induced by immersing the adult zebrafish in 83.25 mM sucrose solution for 14 days after performing the study for survival in sucrose solutions. The change in weight of zebrafish was also observed due to high sucrose-induced hyperglycemia or T2D as compared to control fish, similar to that seen in other animal models of T2D and in diabetic patients. These results suggest that this high sugar-induced hyperglycemic zebrafish model can be used as an alternative hyperglycemia animal model for the study of various metabolic and neurobehavioral disorders in the future.
