In vitro Evaluation of Kigelia pinnata Leaves for Its Antioxidative and Anticancer Activity
Abstract
Previous studies suggest that the Kigelia pinnata leaves have useful effects against diseases mediated through oxidative stress and cancers. In this study, leaves of Kigelia pinnata were studied for presence of different phytochemical constituents, anti-oxidant and anti-cancer activities.Crude methane extracts of Kigelia pinnata leaves showed cytotoxic activity in vitro against non-small cell lung cancinoma (A-549) cells using the MTT assay. Phytochemical evaluation showed the existence of alkaloids, terpenoids, flavonoids, tannins and carbohydrates, etc. To determine antioxidant activities, DPPH assay and ABTS assay were used. To compare the anti-oxidant activity of extracts, standard antioxidants were used. Ld50 value for methanolic extract of Kigelia pinnata was calculated to measure the anticancer activity. Based on the results it was concluded that the leaves of Kigelia pinnata have promising anti-oxidant and anticancer activity.
