Abstract

Histological diagnosis of adrenal lesions is difficult and needs multiple approaches. Histopathological examinations of 31 adrenal specimens were categorized following Weiss and Pass method and scorings were done. Immunohistochemical and special stains were also performed. In the present study, the 12 medullary cases included pheochromocytoma, neuroblastoma, ganglioneuroma, metastasis to adrenal tissue and metstatic pheochromocytoma.19 cortical cases included cortical hyperplasia, adenomas, carcinomas, myelolipomas and one case of cortical carcinoma. Weiss score for cortical carcinoma was more than ‘3’. Pass scores of malignant medullary tumours were more than ‘4’. Immunohistochemical profile and special staining results matched well with the scoring system and histological diagnosis. Combination of gross and histopathological examination including special stain, Weiss and PASS scoring system and immunohistochemical profile help in proper diagnosis of adrenal lesions and should be followed as routine protocol.
