Abstract

Anaemia is a major public health problem. Present study was conducted in 200 undergraduate medical students. Haemoglobin values obtained by Sahli’s method was analysed and students were grouped into anaemic and non-anaemic group. Further grading of anaemia was done as per the WHO criterion. Results were analysed by using SPSS software. Results showed that 27.5% of medical students were anaemic. Gender-wise distribution was 18.35% of males and 38.46% of females were found to be anaemic. As per the grade of anaemia, 18.35% of males and 35.16% females were having mild form of anaemia and only 3.30% of females were having moderate anaemia. The statistical analysis showed a significant relation between normal and anaemic status (p<0.001). Analysis of results shows that females are the vulnerable group. The problem of anaemia in undergraduate college students should be addressed as they are the future of “Medical Health of India”.
