Abstract

Fibrous skeleton of the heart consists of aortic valve annulus (AVA), pulmonary valve annulus (PVA), tricuspid valve annulus (TVA), bicuspid valve annulus (BVA) and fibrous trigone of right and left heart (RFT and LFT), and some senile changes like calcinosis begin to develop as growing old. The senile calcification in the fibrous skeleton of the heart leads to several complications such as valve disorders and block of conduction. We studied to illuminate the incidence and characteristics of the senile calcification in the fibrous skeleton of the heart. We selected 112 heart subjects (63 men, 49 women) that were collected in the Pathological Department, Pyongyang Medical College, Kim Il Sung University, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea from April 2011 to June 2019. According to the pathological autopsy method, we took out the fibrous skeleton of the heart to observe it macroscopically and then observed the calcification finding microscopically under Kossa stain. We performed the analysis by means of χ2-test for the values indicated by “%” and t-test for the values indicated by “M±SE”. The senile calcification in the fibrous skeleton of the heart gets more severe as growing old, as well as in women and in BVA and AVA. As the patients grow older, the developmental order and degree of calcification vary according to the components of the fibrous skeleton of the heart and it develops in one or many localities.
