Abstract

We evaluated the efficacy of two Ginseng-containing prescriptions of Koryo herbal medicines combined with fluconazole (FLC) against systemic candidiasis, using experimental mouse model. The results showed that combined with FLC, treatment of mice with Sa-Gun-Za-Tang or Sip-Zon-Dae-Bo-Tang significantly increased the survival rates and decreased the number of viable Candida albicans cells in the kidneys compared with treating animals with FLC alone(P<0.01 for both comparisons). Compared with untreated controls, treatment of mice with FLC alone did not increase the number of leukocytes significantly (P>0.05), but with FLC+Sa-Gun-Za-Tang or FLC+Sip-Zon-Dae-Bo-Tang combination significantly increased (P<0.01 for both comparisons) the number of leukocytes. FLC+Sa-Mul-Tang has no potent activity against systemic candidiasis both in terms of improved survival and the number of leukocytes and reduction in organ burden in a murine model (P>0.05).
