Knowledge Regarding Birth Control Measure Among Rural and Urban Adolescent Girl: Comparative Descriptive Study

Abstract


Introduction: Adolescent age group of 10–24 year is the beautiful time in which pubertal changes take place. Changes related to high risk sexual behavior and sexual feeling in particular age group need to focus towards the knowledge about contraceptive methods. Objective: To identify and compare the knowledge and attitude of adolescent girls on different birth control devices in rural and urban areas of Ambala, India. Study Design and Setting: The study follows 40 questionnaires and a Likert scale with the expert opinion. Sample of 200 girls were collected to compare the knowledge regarding birth control devices between the girls by using nonprobability convenient sampling. Data analysis consisted of inferential statistics to analyze the result of study. Result: The questionnaire covered all aspect of birth control devices (concept, types, uses and complication).The reliability was calculated by using split half method (0.71) and attitude reliability was found by using cronbach’s alpha (0.82). In the present study,30% of urban adolescent girls had good knowledge, while 69% of rural girls had average knowledge about the birth control measure. Conclusion: Need to enhance sex education in the school and college to reduce teenage pregnancy and to select the choice of contraception as they need in future. Attitude reliability found by cronbach’s alpha was found to be 0.82. In urban area,30% of the adolescent girls were having good knowledge while in rural area no one lies in the same. Age, education status of the student, and sources of mass media plays a significant role towards the better knowledge and good attitude regarding contraception in adolescent girls. Conclusion: Enhancing sex education in the school for adolescents that is culturally appropriate for contraception.
