Abstract

Abstract

Objective: The study was conducted with an objective to assess the effectiveness of coronary risk reduction discharge training programme (CRR-DTP) on self-care behaviour among patients with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Methods: A randomized control trial was conducted in Jan 2017 in HDHI, Ludhiana. 60 patients were selected on the basis of convenience sampling technique and randomly allocated to experimental (30) and control group (30). Coronary risk reduction discharge training programme (CRR-DTP) was provided to experimental group whereas routine nursing care was provided to the control group. The self-care behaviour (in terms of self-care maintenance, management and confidence) was assessed pre and post interventionally (after 1 week) by Modified Self-care of coronary artery disease inventory by Barbara Riegal (2004).Data was collected by observation and self-report (interview) method. Results: The study findings showed that post interventional mean score of self-care maintenance (41.10±2.72 vs 34.50±3.29 t=8.45 p=0.000), self-care management (17.93±1.98 vs 14.83±2.74 t=5.018 p=0.000) and self-care confidence (22.97±1.159 vs 20.70±2.277 t=4.860 p=0.000) has statistically improved in experimental group as compared to the control group. Conclusion: The use of coronary risk reduction discharge training programme (CRR-DTP) has shown statistical difference in improving the self-care behaviour among patients with PCI in experimental group, hence the null hypothesis was rejected.
