The Prevalence of Motoric Cognitive Risk Syndrome and Dementia in Community Residing Older Adults

Abstract


Motoric cognitive risk (MCR) syndrome is characterized by cognitive complaints and slow gait and identifies non-demented older individuals at high risk for transitioning to dementia. MCR has been implicated as predictor of cognitive decline and dementia in older adults and associated with increased mortality.The objective is to find out the prevalence of dementia and MCR and assess association between the fall risk and factors of MCR. A cross sectional study was conducted on 100 community-residing male and female older adults aged >/= 60 years. The subjects were screened for dementia first using ascertain dementia 8 questionnaire. The 28 subjects not having dementia were assessed for cognitive complaints using everyday cognition 12 (Ecog-12), gait speed using 4-meter walk test, mobility disability and fall risk using short fall efficacy scale-international (Short FES-I). MCR was diagnosed based on presence of cognitive complaints and slow gait in non-demented individuals. The level of significance was kept at 5%.Prevalence of dementia was found to be 58% and of MCR Syndrome 0%. For the non-demented population, the mean values of ECog12, Short FES-I & Gait Speed were 1.15 ± 0.18, 9 ± 3.20 & 104.39 ± 18.86 cm/s respectively. Spearman’s correlation coefficient for ECog 12 and gait speed, short FES-I and gait speed and ECog12 and Short FES-I was r = -0.49, -0.13 and 0.282 respectively.The MCR was found to be rare among geriatric population as most of them were already having dementia. There was moderate negative correlation between gait speed and cognition.
