Comparative Study of Open and Closed Method for Treatment of Pilonidal Sinus

Abstract

The aim of this study was the comparison between primary closure and open technique after excision of pilonidal sinus. Group A-10 patients treated by open method (excision followed by healing by secondary intention) and group-B 10 patients treated after excision PNS primary midline suturing done with according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria of study. Assessment of operation time and postoperative assessment of pain, hospital stay, time taken to return to routine work, recurrence and follow-up noted. Mean hospital stay was 15 days in primary closure group and 30 days in open group. Mean duration of healing of wound was 12–15 days in primary closure and 25–30 days in open group. Severe pain in one patient in group-A and two patients in group-B. Primary closure method is safe, feasible and equally effective. Postoperative pain is much less, early discharge from the hospital, healing of wound is faster, decreased morbidity, as compared to open method for treatment of pilonidal sinus.
