Correction Treatment of Genu Varum in Children by Means of Temporary Hemiepiphysiodesis Using Eight-LCP

Abstract


Objectives: Genu varum is often diagnosed in children. Although physiological deformities should be corrected, pathological deformities couldn’t be treated without surgical method. With appearance of many minially invasive operation methods, hemiepiphysiodesis using eight plates has yielded to the increasingly popular method. The aim of our survey is to analyse the effectiveness of the operation using eight-LCP. Method: Between April 2015 and April 2020, We have studied 55 patients with genu varum. Every patient was under appropriate medical treatment during the observation period. Depending on deformity type, an eight-Plate was implanted on the distal lateral femur and/or the proximal lateral tibia. Evaluation was carried out the angle of femorotibial angle radiologically. Results The median age at implantation was 7.3 +/−1.2 years (3-14 years). The median removal period was about 24 months (8–32 montehs). The anatomical femorotibial angle was corrected by on average 1.1 +/0.7°. Redeformity occurred in 2 patients after removal. 8-plate was implanted on the distal lateral femur and the proximal lateral tibia in children who are older than 12 years. Conculsion: Temporary hemiepiphysiodesis using eight-Plates is simple and effective procedure.The latest development of the efficient minimally invasive surgical option makes the treatment of knee varus readily.
