Review Study on Sleep and Sleep Deprivation

Abstract


Sleep is simply a reversible behavioral state of low attention to the environmental typically accompanied by a relaxed posture and some minimal movement. Insomnia is a highly prevalent condition and carries significant burden in terms of functional impairment, health care costs, and increased risk of depression. Worldwide epidemiological studies assessed the prevalence of insomnia without restrictive criteria as 33% in general population. Insomnia may be the primary problem, or it may be associated with other conditions. Insomnia can be caused by physical factors along with psychological factors. Extreme wake leads to energy consumption, hunger, and increase appetite and if reaches the limit to be called insomnia, digestion is not performed completely. Many prescribed drugs can interfere with sleep, like certain antidepressants and medications for asthma or vital sign. Many over-the-counter medications—like some pain medications, allergy and cold medications, and weight-loss products—contain caffeine and other stimulants which will disrupt sleep. This section will review common causes of sleep deprivation as well as the prevalence of sleep disorders among college students, and the influence of sleep disorders on sleepiness
