Aetiological Prescription in Homeopathy that Cured a Case of Chronic Urticaria

Tushita Thakur

Abstract

Urticaria is a common skin disease characterised by recurrent pinkish or red, raised wheals or hives with itching that usually last less than 24 h. However, in some patients lesions persist intermittently or continuously for more than six weeks and are classified as chronic urticaria (CU). CU may be further subdivided into CU with potential provoking factors; Autoimmune urticaria and Chronic idiopathic urticaria (CIU) depending upon aggravating factors and the presence of circulating auto antibodies. Homoeopathy has emerged as a treatment of choice for chronic skin diseases. Cohort surveys using validated Quality of Life questionnaires; economic surveys as well as patient-reported and clinically observed effects of Homoeopathy point towards its efficacy in chronic skin diseases and skin allergies. Treatment in Homoeopathy is individualized. In the case report presented here, Homoeopathic medicine Arnica montana was prescribed on the basis of aetiology in management of chronic urticaria. The Urticaria activity score (UAS) done at the start of treatment was 42. The weekly one dose of Arnica Montana 1M followed by Rubrum metallicum 30 (placebo) /1 drachms four pills three times in a day for a period of three months achieved complete resolution of CU; with UAS score 0 at the end of 12 weeks. Further three month follow up with placebo was done with no appearance of symptoms in the patient.
