Role of Asbab-e-Sitta Zarooriya in Ziyabetus Shakri (Diabetes Mellitus) an insight of Unani Medicine: A Review

Abstract


Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, action or both. This can arise in many different ways but it is most commonly due to autoimmune type 1 diabetes or to adult-onset type 2 diabetes. Lack of insulin affects the metabolism of carbohydrate, protein and fat, and can cause a significant disturbance of water and electrolyte homeostasis. Globally an estimated 422 million adults are living with DM, according to the latest 2016 data from WHO. The WHO estimated that there were 171 million diabetic individuals in the world in 2000 and projected it to 366 million in 2030. Major contribution pointed towards the developing countries like India. India has the largest number of diabetic individual in the world and is being called as a Diabetic Capital all the world. There were approximately 31.7 million individuals in India in 2000 and it is expected to touch 79.4 million in 2030. In the Unani system of medicine, the world Diabetes means siphon or running through and Mellitus is a Latin world means sweetened like honey was used by Aretaeus. It is also described by various Greek and Arabic vernaculars as synonyms of diabetes are “Ziyabitus”, “Ziasqus”, “Dawar” (giddiness) Prakar, “Dolab” (water wheel) and “Zalaqulkulliya because according to Unani medicine Ziyabitusshakri is a disease in which the consumed water is passed out through the kidney immediately after the intake of patient. It is like to Zalaqulmeda-wa-lamaa (Diarrhoea), Unani system of medicine is traditional and the most ancient practiced form of medicine in the world. It suggests a unique combination of Asbab-e-SittaZarooriyah, which are six essential factors like Atmospheric Air, Dietetics, Rest and Physical activities, Rest and Psychological activities, Sleeping patterns and Wakefulness and Eliminations and Retentions that can help in the prevention of Diabetes Mellitus. In this review paper, we will discuss the role of Asbab-e-SittaZarooriyahin prevention and control of Diabetes Mellitus.
