https://medicaljournals.stmjournals.in/index.php/RRJoUSH/article/view/3348
<p>Insomnia, known as <em>Sehar </em>in the <em>Unani </em>system of Medicine, refers to the condition of being unable to fall asleep or stay asleep, primarily caused by an imbalance in the brain's temperament due to excessive <em>Hararat </em>and <em>Yaboosat</em>. It is recognized as a risk factor for depression and is more prevalent in women. Insomnia, or sleeplessness, is a widespread issue worldwide and is characterized by difficulty in initiating or maintaining sleep, leading to significant negative impacts on one's well-being. According to <em>Unani </em>scholars and researchers, insomnia tends to increase with age due to the heightened production of melancholic humor in advanced stages. Sleep plays a crucial role in strengthening the vital force (<em>Quwā Haywāniyya), </em>pneuma (<em>Rūh</em>), and facilitating proper digestion. It provides a rejuvenating effect on the body, eliminating tiredness and preparing it for the next day's activities, which are essential for overall health and well-being. The management of insomnia in the <em>Unani </em>system focuses on addressing the underlying causes, particularly by moisturizing the brain or <em>Tarteeb e Dimagh </em>through the use of <em>Nutul, Saoot, Tila, Shamoom, ZimadLakhlakha, Tadheen, Qutoor/Taqteer</em>, <em>Riyazat</em>, and Hammam. The aim of this review paper is to outline the definition of insomnia, its various causes, signs, and symptoms, potential complications, as well as the general principles of management through regimental therapy.</p>Riyazuddin ShaikhKhan Nazma MukhtarPatel Furqan AhamedNadim Iqbal khanAnees ShaikhNafisa K Khan

https://medicaljournals.stmjournals.in/index.php/RRJoUSH/article/view/3349
<p>Kameela or Kamala, a renowned Unani medicine, has been utilized by Unani physicians for centuries to effectively address Amraze Jildiya, commonly known as skin diseases. Its medicinal properties have been extensively documented in classical Unani texts. These perennial shrubs or small trees are widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions, typically found at altitudes below 1,000 m. The pharmacological activities of Kameela encompass a broad spectrum, owing to its diverse range of natural compounds. The compounds found in it are predominantly phenols, diterpenoids, steroids, flavonoids, cardenolides, triterpenoids, coumarins, isocoumarins, and various other substances, with a notable focus on phenols. Notably, bergenin, malotophilippinens, rottlerin, and isorottlerin have been successfully isolated, identified, and recognized for their intriguing biological activities. These activities encompass antimicrobial, antioxidant, antiviral, cytotoxicity, anti-inflammatory, immunoregulatory, and protein inhibition against cancer cells. Within the Unani system, Roghan Kameela and Zimad Jarb are well-established combination medicines employed for the treatment of jarb (scabies) and kharish (itching), demonstrating their time-tested efficacy and safety. The present comprehensive review highlights the significant value of Mallotus philippinensis as a rich source of medically important natural molecules, presenting compelling evidence for its potential future application within modern medicine.</p>Khan FehminAsma ChoudharyMohd Furqan Ahmad PatelRafi Ahmed ChoudharyArshad Pathan

2023-12-302023-12-301031622Urticaria Uncovered: Understanding The Condition And Optimizing Its Management
https://medicaljournals.stmjournals.in/index.php/RRJoUSH/article/view/3350
<p><em>Urticaria</em>, also known as hives, is a skin condition characterized by pale red, raised, and itchy bumps. The name "urticaria" is derived from the Latin words "<em>urtica</em>" and "urere," which mean nettle and to burn, respectively. This skin rash manifests as pink to flesh-colored plaques that are non-pitting and edematous. The primary cause of urticaria is believed to be a condition known as "<em>Fasad e Dam</em>," which refers to blood impairment. Urticaria can be classified into acute or chronic forms, and it arises when the vapors of "Dam e Merari" (bilious blood) or "Balgham e Boraqi" (acidic phlegm) come into contact with the skin or outer regions of the body. Acute urticaria can occur at any age and typically lasts for less than six weeks, while chronic hives persist for longer durations. Approximately 10-20% of individuals globally are likely to encounter an episode of urticaria or angioedema (a deeper tissue swelling) at some point in their lives, and it is more prevalent among women. The characteristic features and manifestations of urticaria, referred to as "Shara," encompass recurring transient skin eruptions, a sensation of warmth and tingling just prior to the emergence of lesions, as well as swollen wheals accompanied by a reddish border, intense itching often accompanied by a burning sensation (which tends to worsen in the evening), mild to severe pruritus, physical urticaria triggered by various factors. This sensitivity can be triggered by various factors, including cold and heat, exposure to sunlight, vibrations, pressure, perspiration, physical activity, and even a condition known as dermatographism. While modern allopathic medicine is commonly used in the treatment of urticaria, it may not always provide satisfactory results for chronic cases and can be associated with side effects. Therefore, there is interest in exploring alternative approaches, including the <em>Unani</em> system of medicine, for managing this condition. In this review study, we aim to investigate the various aspects of urticaria, with a particular focus on the perspective of <em>Unani</em> medicine and other interventions. Through the exploration of pharmaceutical interventions and alternative remedies, our aim is to offer a thorough comprehension of the choices accessible for the treatment of urticaria. The intention is to find effective interventions that may offer better outcomes and fewer adverse effects compared to conventional allopathic treatments.</p>Laiba SayyedRafi Ahmad ChoudharyMohd Furqan Ahmed PatelAshad PathanFehmin Khan

2023-12-302023-12-3010381510.37591/rrjoush.v10i3.3350Unraveling The Concept Of "Humma (Fever)"And Unani Fundamentals In Its Management
https://medicaljournals.stmjournals.in/index.php/RRJoUSH/article/view/3355
The Unani system of medicine provides an exhaustive and comprehensive account of fever, delving into its intricacies and nuances. Beyond mere reduction of heightened body temperature, the management of fever within this system encompasses a holistic approach to healing. This approach is underpinned by three core modes of treatment—Ilaj bil Ghiza (dietotherapy), Ilaj bil Tadbeer (regimental therapy), and Ilaj bil Dawa (pharmacotherapy), all of which are rooted in the foundational principles of Unani medicine. The utilization of cold water and a variety of beverages (mashroob) plays a pivotal role in effectively lowering body temperature. Simultaneously, the incorporation of easily digestible and nourishing foods, particularly the jayyadul kemoos diet, including maul asl, ma’ul shaeer, kashak-us- shaeer, and aash-e-jau, are carefully administered in modest quantities. These dietary measures are meticulously designed to not only fortify the tabiát (body constitution) but also to prevent the exacerbation of pathological elements. In the realm of pharmacotherapy, a diverse array of remedies is employed to tackle different manifestations of fever. These include Dafe Humma (antipyretic agents), Muarriqat (agents that promote perspiration), Musaffiyat wa Muaddilat (agents that balance bodily humors), Mubarridat wa Musakkinat (febrifuge and sedative agents), Mudirrat (agents that regulate bodily functions), Muqawwi Kabid (hepatoprotective agents), and Mufarrehat (agents that promote excretion). In essence, the Unani approach to fever management is a finely woven tapestry of various modalities, harmoniously synchronized to address the multifaceted aspects of the condition and guide the individual towards holistic well-being.Asif Ali ChaudharyFouzia FarooquiS. https://medicaljournals.stmjournals.in/index.php/RRJoUSH/article/view/3404
Myrrh is a highly aromatic resin exuded from the bark of various species of the Commiphora genus, such as Commiphora myrrha, Commiphora molmol, and Commiphora abyssinica. The name “Commiphora” is derived from the Greek words “kommi” and “phero” meaning “gum-bearing.” These trees are mainly found in arid regions of the Middle East and Africa. The resin is harvested by making incisions in the bark and allowing the sap to dry and harden into reddish-brown lumps or tears. Commiphora species have been used since ancient times for various purposes. In the food industry, myrrh is used as a flavouring agent in beverages, baked goods, and confectionery products. In cosmetics, it is used for its skin-nourishing and anti-ageing properties. In perfumery, myrrh is a popular ingredient in high-end fragrances due to its rich, woody aroma. Moreover, Commiphora species are also highly valued in traditional medicine for their antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and pain-relieving properties. They are used to treat various ailments such as wounds, fever, cough, and gastrointestinal disorders. Myrrh has been used for medicinal and wound-healing purposes since ancient biblical times. It has been linked to women’s health and purification rituals. Its medicinal use was first documented in China around AD 600 during the Tang dynasty. According to Avicenna, it was believed to have antiseptic properties and was applied over the dead body. The present review was aimed to provide an overview of Commiphora myrrha, including its ethnobotanical, pharmacognostic, traditional, chemical, pharmacological, and clinical aspects.Hina FatimaJuveriya NaazShagufta Anwar
