Treating Tinea Capitis with Unani Formulation: A Case Study of 25-year-old Male Patient

Abstract


Tinea Capitis is a superficial fungal infection of scalp, mainly caused by dermatophytes Trichophyton tonsurans and Microsporum canis (highly inflammatory) and Microsporum audouinii are second most common cause. It has two types’ viz. endothrix and ectothrix. Tinea Capitis is also known as Ringworm of the scalp and Tinea tonsurans. In Unani System of Medicine Tinea is known as Qūbā, characterized by burning, itching along with roughness and desquamation over skin surface in which scales shed off from the skin. Unani System of Medicine provides a wide range of antifungal drugs. Case presentation: A 25-year-old male patient came to outpatient department of NIUM Hospital, with complaints of itchy and erythematous scalp lesions combined with hair loss for past 6 months. He was suspected of dermatophytosis and mycological analysis of all suspected lesions was performed. Clinical features and KOH scrapping results confirmed tinea capitis. The patient was treated with a Unani Ointment and Sharbat-i-‘Unnāb for 6 weeks. Discussion: Evidence-based treatment of Unani medicine to improve the condition of the patient with Tinea capitis is discussed here.
