Aahar (Food) is considered as the first pillar of Ayurveda; among the three, Nidra and Brahmacharya are the other two pillars. Many diseases can be prevented by a modified diet (nutritious). Karshya is one of the diseases related to annavaha srotas. It is a type of malnutrition resulting from a deficiency of proteins and calories in food over a long period of time. It is very common among young children(usually below 5 years of age). In Ayurveda, Karshya is explained as Apatarpanajanya vyadhi and caused by Rasavaha Shrotodusti where vata dosha plays a primary role in the pathogenesis, along with vitiated Pitta. Laghu-Dravya-Santarpana Chikitsa should be advised in Karshya-Rogi. Vata and vata- pitta dosh of chikitsa by Bringhan drugs and foods is helpful in Karshya. Protein Energy Malnutrition is an important cause of childhood morbidity and mortality that leads to permanent impairment of the physical and mental growth of those who survive.
