Correlation of Predisposing Factors and Knee Osteoarthritis: A Cross-sectional Study
Abstract
A cross sectional study was carried out in Hospital of the NIUM to study the predisposing factors of Osteoarthritis of Knee among patients attending different OPDs. All Patients aged 40 years and above of both sexes were included in the study. A total of 507 patients over a period of 1 year were studied. Out of 507, 83.23% (422) were diagnosed with Knee Osteoarthritis (OA) as confirmed by Kellgren and Lawrens grading system of OA based on radiographic findings. Nearly two thirds of study subjects were women. OA increases with age and BMI. Predisposing factors like addictive habits, history of knee injury and occupational knee bending were seen in only a few of study subjects. There is need to spread awareness among people to adopt preventive measures at an earlier age along with healthy lifestyle to reduce the body weight and hence the risk of OA.
