Abstract

Introduction: The acceleration of Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) has become an alarming health problem across the globe. The Global Burden of Disease study has reported that by the year 2025, CAD would be the major cause of death all over the world including the developing countries. CAD is the most common cause of death in country like India. CAD will be the single largest cause of disease burden globally by the year 2020. Methodology: The present study was conducted among patients attending medical OPD in Doon Medical College Hospital, Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India. Survey approach and descriptive research design were selected for the study. A total of 200 samples were selected by nonprobability convenient sampling. Knowledge was assessed through dichotomous questionnaire on risk factors of CAD. Results: In the present study, majority 69% (138)of the samples were males and 31% of the samples were female. About 75% of samples were light worker. Most of the samples (76%) had adequate knowledge and 21.5% of the samples had moderate knowledge; rest of 2.5% of the samples had poor knowledge regarding risk factors of CAD. There were positive associations between knowledge and selected demographical variables such as age and sex. Present study show that patients have good knowledge regarding risk factors of CAD. Conclusion: The population has good knowledge regarding risk factors of CAD. It is necessary to aware the population regarding the risk factors and management. Good knowledge may be effective in minimizing the prevalence of the cardiac diseases and disease burden. The government has to develop and implement cardiac disease control programmes to spread awareness about risk factors of CAD in communities.
