A study to assess the knowledge and attitude towards healthy and regular breakfast among undergraduate students of Moradabad, U.P.

Abstract


A research titled “A study to assess knowledge and attitude towards healthy and regular breakfast among undergraduate students of selected colleges of Moradabad, UP, was conducted in partial fulfillment of the requirement of a degree of ‘Bachelors of Science in Nursing at Vivekanand College of Nursing, Moradabad, UP. The present study is an attempt to determine the students’ knowledge towards healthy and regular breakfast, which in turn will help the students to find out the problems in relation to healthy and regular breakfast and thereby take the adequate nutrition. The objectives of this study were to assess the students’ knowledge and attitude towards healthy and regular breakfast and to find the relationship between students’ knowledge and attitude. The conceptual framework for this study was based on Health Belief Model”. Hochbaum, Rosen stockandkegel. This study aims at assessing the students’ knowledge regarding healthy and regular breakfast and attitude towards healthy and regular breakfast. A cross-sectional survey approach was undertaken to assess the students’ knowledge and attitude. The 1st year undergraduate students were selected as a population. The total population was 120, 1st year undergraduate students. The tools developed for this study were background information, knowledge questionnaire to assess ‘Students Knowledge Regarding Healthy Breakfast (KRHRB)’ and Likert scale was used to ‘assess the Attitude Towards Healthy and Regular Breakfast (ATHRB)’. To ensure the content validity, the tools were submitted to nine experts with the blue print of the tool and modifications were made as per the experts’ suggestions. After validation, the modified tools were subjected to the pretesting among 3, 2nd year, B.Sc. (N) students of Vivekanand College of Nursing, Moradabad, UP. A pilot study was conducted at Vivekanand Hospital & Research Center, Moradabad, UP, among 20, 1st year Optometry students on 10th Jan, 2020. The study was found to be feasible. The data was collected from 10th January 2020 to 16th January 2020 from 1st year undergraduate students. Analysis of the data was done by using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The data was analyzed using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) version 20 software. Most of the students, 77 (64%), were in age group of 16–18 years, the majority of them, 69 (57.5%), were male students, 73 (60.8%), of the students were Hindus, and 65 (54.2%) students had mixed type of food habits. Majority of the students, 86 (71.7%) were from North India. Most of the students, 73 (60.8%) were day scholars. Out of 120 students, majority 70 (58.3%) belongs to joint family. Most of the fathers, 62 (51.7%) and mothers 38 (31.7%) had education up to graduation. The family income of majority of the students 54 (45%) was more than Rs. 30,000/month. The present study revealed that majority of students, 75 (62.5%), had average knowledge regarding the healthy and regular breakfast. Most of the students 68 (56.7%) had favorable attitude towards the healthy and regular breakfast. The study revealed that students have good knowledge and have better attitude towards healthy and regular breakfast.
