Abstract

The concept of learning styles has developed drastically among professional educators in all stages of the educational system. The expression of “learning styles” refers to the understanding that every student acquires knowledge and skills differently. Some learners demonstrate better when information is presented through the use of words known as ‘verbal learners’, whereas others learn more efficiently when it is processed through the use of pictures known as ‘visual learners’. Active students choose to work in a group, while reflective students choose independent learning. The current study is about the learning style preferences among selected GNM and B.sc Nursing students in College of Nursing, Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research (CIHSR), Dimapur, Nagaland. The main aim of the study was to assess the learning style preferences of the nursing students. A descriptive study design was adopted. A sample size of 90 subjects was selected using purposive sampling technique. The college of nursing research committee permitted the study and ethical clearance was obtained. The informed written consent from the subjects and permission from concerned authorities were obtained before the data collection. To analyze the data, descriptive and inferential statistics were used in this study. The study findings revealed that most preferred learning styles was under the dimension visual/verbal 53% and there is a significant association between system of education and learning style preferences p=0.009 (p<0.05). In conclusion, the objectives for assessment of learning styles preferred by the students were identified which in turn will greatly impact concrete learning among the nursing students.
