Factors Affecting Academic Performance of Health Science Students in case of Harar Health Science College, Eastern Ethiopia
Abstract
Background: The concept of quality education is still contentious, it is clear from a lot of research that
good quality education facilitates the acquisition of knowledge, skills and attitudes that have intrinsic
value and also helps address important human goal. Objectives: To Assess Factors Affecting Academic
Performance of Health Science Students in case of Harar Health Science College. Method: A crosssectional
study design was employed to assess factors affecting academic performance health Science
student’s enrolled in full-time undergraduate programms total of 332 participants were recruited for
the study. Sample students were selected by creating strata among the study programs and then the
sample were distributed to each departments using Proportional allocation. Data was checked for
completeness and consistency then entered to Epi-Data version 3.1 and exported and analyzed using
SPSS version 21. Descriptive analysis frequencies, mean Standard deviation were used. Independent
sample T-test were used to determine the relationship between identified factors and students profile
on academic performance. Result: In the present study a total of 332 study participants were involved,
the mean age was 22.7 years with SD + 2.03. Teacher related factors had the major influential factors
affects academic performance of student, with the highest grand mean value of 3.57, followed by student
related factors and home related factors with grand mean of 3.51 and 3.27. The study found gender was
a significant difference on the level of identify factors, with female scoring highest and male scoring
lowest. (F value 4.36, p-value 0.037). Different year of level were significant difference on the degree
of factors affect academic performance, third years scoring highest mean and the second years scoring
lowest with (F value of 7.99, p-value 0.000).
