Satisfaction with Childbirth Experience Among Primipara Mothers with a Fear of Childbirth

Abstract


Background: A negative childbirth experience is very common event which may lead to PTSD. Preparing the women for birth, supporting the mother during birth and judicious intrapartum care can lead to the positive birth experience. Objectives: The aim of the study is to develop and assess the effect of supportive educational intervention on satisfaction with child birth experience among primipara mothers with a fear of childbirth. Methods: This RCT was conducted on 205 primipara mothers with a fear of childbirth attending Gynae OPD at 24–28 weeks of pregnancy, primipara mothers underwent the WDEQ-A test to assess their level of pregnancy anxiety before being randomly assigned to the experimental or control group. Within 1 week of delivery, satisfaction with childbirth experience by using birth satisfaction scale. Results: After the interventions, there were significant differences between groups on post intervention scores for satisfaction with childbirth experience at p<0.001. Conclusion: Based on the results of the study it can be said that supportive educational intervention was effective in primipara mothers for increasing confidence for childbirth. Improving antenatal emotional wellbeing will lead to positive childbirth experience with better perinatal outcome.
