Clinical Study for Evaluation of Comprehensive Ayurvedic Management in Nicotine Use Disorder
Abstract
Substance use disorder (SUD), is a condition in which the use of one or more substances leads to a clinically significant impairment or distress. 'Substance' in this clinical study is limited to nicotine-based substances (Nicotine Use Disorder). This study evaluates the effect of Ayurvedic management on Nicotine Use Disorder. 36 Patients were registered in this study having signs and symptoms of nicotine use disorder and were treated with Ayurvedic management for a period of twelve weeks that includes Nasya Karma (errhine therapy) Shamana drug (self-made powdered Ayurvedic formulation) and Satvaavjaya Chikitsa (Behavioral and Psychological Therapy). Diagnostic criterion taken into consideration was Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND) and psychometric parameters; Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS) and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) were also taken into consideration before and after completion of trial. Ashta Manas Pareekshya Bhavas were also taken into account for analysis of results. Statistical analysis was performed by using Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. Statistically highly significant results (P< 0.001) were obtained in all the parameters. The results indicate that comprehensive Ayurvedic management has significant result in the management of Nicotine Use Disorder.
