Efficacy of Nasya Karma and Sirodhara in the Management of Ardita (Facial Paralysis): A Case Study

Abstract

Stressful and hectic lifestyle of today’s era has become a predisposing factor for various diseases. Either its heart diseases, diabetes mellitus (DM), paralysis or facial paralysis (Ardit). It is found that stress is a reason in one or the other way. According to Ayurveda aggravation of Vata is the prime factor in causing Ardita. Based on the symptoms described in classics, Ardita can be correlated with facial paralysis or Bell’s palsy, in which VII cranial nerve is involved. It is a disease characterized by incomplete closure of eye and naso-labial fold loss, causing forehead creases, tearing, dysarthia, hyperacusis, deviation of mouth to opposite side, excessive salivation, taste disturbances and smell loss. It is a very painful condition, in which no proper treatment is yet discovered. The analgesic and steroid used for its management has got many side effects. Ayurvedic classics explain the treatment of Ardit as Navan Nasya, Murdha Taila, Netratarpan, Nadi Swedana, Upanaha with Mansa Rasa and Shamanaushadhi. So the present study provides a hope of ray in the management of Ardit. It is a single case study in which complete cure of facial paralysis was observed after Sarbhanga Abhyanga and Swedana, Nasya and Sirodhara procedures for a duration of 14 days along with some internal medicines such as Mashbaladi Kwath, Yograjguggulu, Ashwoganda, Satavari and Ajoshwani Churna, for a duration of one month.
