Monostotic Fibrous Dysplasia: Facial Swellings A Diagnostic Conundrum

Abstract

Asymmetrical swelling of the mandible in children may pose a significant diagnostic dilemma. The differential diagnosis ranges from traumatic, infectious, and metabolic processes to benign and malignant tumors that may present with similar clinical and radiological features, making an accurate diagnosis quite difficult. This is an illustrative case involving an 11-year-old girl who initially presented with tumefaction of the mandible and after several investigations and referrals were diagnosed as Monostotic form of fibrous dysplasia (MOFD). We also emphasize the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in its management. The clinical and radiographic findings of MOFD are presented and implications for treatment are discussed.
