Use of Air-Turbine for Removal of Impacted Teeth

Abstract

Removal of an impacted tooth may need cutting of bone and splitting of a tooth. It can be either done manually with the help of a chisel and a maleate or electrically by using hand a piece and a bur. We can use micromotor handpiece or air-turbine. Many dental surgeons opine that the use of air-turbine (air rotor) can cause tissue emphysema that results in marked swelling of the face and advocate the use of micromotor handpiece only. This research has been carried out to assess the effects of the use of air-turbine (air rotor) during the removal of impacted teeth in 121 cases over a period of 2 years. The result is encouraging. There is no tissue emphysema causing swelling in all cases.
