Abstract

Aim - The present study aimed to evaluate the relationship between natural head posture, cephalic index, and dental parameters (maxillary arch width and mandibular anterior crowding).

Material and Methods –100 case records (lateral cephalograms and dental casts) were used in this study (86 females and 14 males). The cases were divided into two groups; Group I (38 subjects) crowding less than 2mm and Group II (62 subjects) crowding more than 2mm. The cranio-cervical angles, cranio-vertical angles, and cranio-horizontal angles were measured in both groups. The postural variables were calculated as the mean and standard deviation. The independent Student’s t-test was used to determine if a significant head postural difference exists between the two groups.

Results – The mean value for cranio-cervical angles were 93.7105, 97.9474, 90.1842, 93.5789, degrees respectively and cranio-vertical angleswere 94.3684, 90.42 degrees in Group I. In Group II the mean value for cranio-cervical angles were 106.5484, 108.6452, 100.4839, 102.2419, degrees respectively and cranio-vertical angles were 98.8387 and 93.6452 degrees. The difference in cranio-cervical, cranio-vertical, and cranio-horizontal angles between the two groups was found to be statisticallysignificant (p<0.05).

Conclusion – There was a significant correlation obtained between Natural Head Position and mandibular anterior crowding, no correlation was seen between NHP, cephalic index, maxillary arch width.
