Comparative evaluation of Chromogranin A levels in GCF and saliva in healthy, chronic periodontitis and aggressive periodontitis patients – A Descriptive Co-relational study.
Abstract
Periodontal destruction is a combination of complex physiopathological process. Stress acts in the body by releasing stress hormones, the glucocorticoids and the catecholamines. Chromogranin A is a secretory glycoprotein which can be used as a biomarker.
Aims: The aim of the study was to evaluate levels of chromogranin A in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and saliva in healthy, chronic periodontitis and aggressive periodontitis patients and to further correlate the clinical parameters.
Settings and Design: The study groups included 60 participants (age: 17–55 years) with healthy
periodontium (n=20), chronic periodontitis (n=20) and aggressive periodontitis (n=20), respectively. Methods and Material: The researchers assessed clinical parameters and collected samples of saliva and fluid from the gums to estimate the levels of chromogranin A using an enzyme-linked
immunosorbent assay. Statistical analysis used: The Statistical software (SPSS version 17.0) was used. Results: Chromogranin A levels in saliva were 288 and 271 μg/ml and in the GCF were 250 and 271 μg/ml in Groups B and C respectively. It was found that GI and PI were significantly elevated in chronic and aggressive periodontitis in comparison to the controls. Conclusions: Chromogranin A levels in salivary and GCF are almost similar in chronic and aggressive periodontitis patients, and absent in healthy periodontium. Thus, it may be concluded that the chromogranin A may be used as a biomarker and that the immunopathologies of the diseases may be similar
