Abstract

Background: Pregnancy is one of the most precious and joyful moment in every couple’s married life but not all of them undergoes a period of joyful overcoming due to the risks being developed during the period of pregnancy. To some extent, the pregnant women get support from the spouses and their family but not all the pregnant women get this privilege of support. Moreover, antenatal women with pregnancy induced hypertension need much support from their husbands to overcome this crisis in order to deliver a healthy baby. Methods and Materials: A descriptive survey research design was employed. Data was collected among 100 husbands of pregnant women who attended antenatal OPD of selected hospitals, in Pattukkottai. Data was collected using structured knowledge questionnaire regarding pregnancy induced hypertension and prenatal social support scale. Results: Only 42% of the husbands were aware about pregnancy induced hypertension and only 37% of them were willing to help their wives during pregnancy and only about 45% of the men were willing to act as child birth companion during labor. Majority (62%) of the husbands had inadequate knowledge regarding pregnancy induced hypertension and only 32% of the husbands had provided adequate level of support. Conclusion: The study concluded that only a significant proportion of husbands were aware about pregnancy induced hypertension and are willing to provide support during antenatal period. Hence, the study results suggest that male involvement in maternal care has to be strengthened to restore the physical and mental health of the women.
