Pterygoid Implants: A Narrative Review

Arpit Sikri, Jyotsana Sikri

Abstract

The replacement of missing teeth in the maxillary posterior region poses a constant challenge for implant surgeons. This is a result of multiple challenges found in the back part of the upper jaw, which include concerns regarding the amount and quality of the existing bone, the structure of the maxillary sinus, and the complexities involved in reaching the area. Many surgical techniques, such as sinus lift, bone grafting, angled implants, shorter implants, and zygomatic implants, have been attempted to address these limitations. However, each of these procedures possesses its own disadvantages Alternatively, the pterygomaxillary region offers a highly favorable location for implant placement and restoration of the posterior maxilla. The current narrative review work focuses on the effective positioning of an implant and restoration of an atrophied posterior maxilla using the pterygomaxillary region without the need for any extra surgical operations.
