Effectiveness of an Intervention on Nurse’s and Caregiver’s Knowledge and Practices Regarding Chemotherapy Induced Neutropenic Complications: A Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract

Objective: To assess the effectiveness of an intervention on knowledge and practices of nurses and caregivers regarding chemotherapy induced neutropenic complications. Methods: A total of 51 nurses and 105 patients and their caregivers were enrolled in the study using cluster randomization. 27 nurses and 51 patient’s and their caregiver’s were enrolled in control group from radiotherapy department and 24 nurses and 54 each patients and their caregivers were enrolled in experimental group from pediatric hematology oncology. Data collection instruments were demographic and work profile of nurses and caregivers, Chemotherapy Induced Neutropenia (CIN) knowledge questionnaires; neutropenia guideline observation checklists for evaluating practices compliance with designed protocols related to Hand washing; Oral care; IV line care; and Sitz bath. Results: Mean scores for nurse’s and caregiver’s knowledge as well as practices after the intervention were significantly (p<0.005) higher. Conclusion: Designing and implementing evidence based nursing intervention protocol is required to improve nurse’s and caregiver’s knowledge and practices for better patient’s outcome.
