Patch Testing

Abstract

Contact dermatitis is an inflammatory disorder (erythema, edema and vesiculation) caused by repeated contact with an exogenous or noxious agent progressed to skin sensitivity or directly damage the skin. The prevalence of work-related Allergic Contact Dermatitis e.g., hair dressing, construction work, cleaning and health care biomedical devices etc. accounts for 20% in the general population. Patch test are standard method for diagnosing chronic dermatitis or Allergic Contact Dermatitis (ACD). Additional tests may prove valuable in establishing a definite causative relationship e.g., Repeated open application tests (ROAT), provocative use tests (PUTs), Atopy patch test (APT), Photo-patch tests. The interpretation of patch test is challenging as false positive and false negative occur. Patients should be educated on avoidance of relevant allergens and advised alternative products for their use. In this review, we present a basic list of allergens in our country.
