Abstract

Statement of problem: Evaluate the effect of knowledge, skills, and self-efficacy on home care of tracheostomy among caregivers of clients attending head & neck cancer OPD at TMH with a view to develop pictographic pamphlet. The research approach used in this study was a survey approach and the design was descriptive one group pre-test post-test design. Samples were caregiver of patients with tracheostomy attending the head and neck OPD and admitted in the ward of selected TMH.. Hundred caregivers of the patients with tracheostomy from the selected hospital in Mumbai formed the sample.. Standardized tool for self-efficacy in managing chronic illness was used to assess self-efficacy of caregivers in managing tracheostomy care. An Opinionative was developed to record their views on the prepared pamphlet. To determine the content validity tool was prepared and submitted to 12 subject experts from nursing department. The reliability coefficient was calculated using spearman Brown formula. The calculated r was 0.92. Data analysis: We used Kolmogorov Smirnov test to obtain the normality of the scores. As the scores were non-normally distributed we used Wilcoxon Signed Rank test to see if there is statistically significant difference between the scores at pre and post. The scores for pre and post was summarized using Median (IQR). Statistical significance was deemed present for p-values below 0.05..The study had shown significance in the pre-test and post-test scores of overall knowledge and practice. As well as Knowledge score on purpose, nebulization, suctioning, stoma care, infection control and complication of tracheostomy care.
