Abstract
Gastroenteritis results from the infection of the digestive or the gastrointestinal tract due to viruses or bacteria. It is characterised by the rapid onset of diarrhoea with or without vomiting which include nausea, fever, and abdominal pain. Diarrhoea usually causes frequent passage of unformed liquid stools. Aim and Objectives: To assess the mothers’ knowledge status and impact of clinical pharmacist in creating awareness about gastroenteritis and implementing patient education programmes. Methods: A hospital-based, prospective study was conducted for a period of 5 months from September 2019 to January 2020 among 125 patients in ESI hospital, Bangalore with age group of <18 to >36 years. Result: A total of 125 mothers were considered to the study questionnaire; 32% were aged 24–30 years, 60% were uneducated, 68% were housewives, and 28% had <3 lakhs income. 45% have bacterial infections which caused gastroenteritis, 60% of them regularly consumed ORS. The majority (48%) had a poor knowledge, 22.4% of mothers have excellent knowledge. Conclusion: Most of the patients were seen among the patients who regarded the use of ORS in prevention of dehydration. Yet certain lapses are seen in the knowledge of patients regarding its administration. Mothers must be encouraged to start ORS solution without waiting for a visit to the doctor. Such simple measures to improve mothers’ knowledge would considerably reduce the burden of morbidity and mortality amongst children under 5 years of age.
