A Triangulation Study to Assess the Behavior of Patients, Family Members and Healthcare Providers Regarding DOTS Programme in Selected DOTS Centers of Delhi

Abstract


Introduction: Tuberculosis (TB) is a major public health problem in the country. India is the highest TB burden country globally and accounts for one-fifth of the global incidences. The present study was taken under research to assess the behavior of patients, family members and healthcare providers (HCPs) regarding DOTS programme in selected DOTS centers of Delhi, India. Objective: The objectives were to assess the behavior pattern of patient, family members, HCP regarding DOTS programme, to identify association between behavior pattern of patient and HCPs, between behavior patterns of patient and their family members regarding DOTS programme and between behavior pattern of patient and the selected demographic variable that is gender and socioeconomic status. Also, to explore (in-depth) the behavior pattern of patient, family members and HCP regarding DOTS programme. Methods: Both qualitative and quantitative approach with a nonexperimental descriptive design was adopted for the research study. Sample considered of 127 study participants (62 patients, 62 family members and three HCPs) for quantitative data analysis and for qualitative it was (four patients, four family members and three HCPs) in selected DOTS center of Delhi, India by using total enumeration sampling technique. Standardized tool was used (O.P. Aggarwal socioeconomic scale) to assess the socioeconomic status of patients and family members. Structured interview schedule and semi-structured in-depth interview schedule were used to assess the behaviour of patients, family members and HCPs regarding DOTS programme. Results: The study revealed that there was no significant association between the behaviour pattern of patient and HCP, behaviour pattern of a patient with their demographic variable i.e. age and socioeconomic status but there was a significant association between the behaviour pattern of patients and their family members. Conclusion: Positive behaviour was shown by the patients and HCPs towards DOTS programme but negative behavior was shown by the family members towards the DOTS programme.
