

Risk of Hypertension among Pre-Elderly and Elderly in West Java Province, Indonesia
Abstract
Objective: Hypertension (HT) is an important risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, particularly in older people. The aim of the study was to overview the health and nutritional characteristics among pre-elderly and elderly and to investigate its association with HT status in Kebon Kelapa village, West Java Province, Indonesia. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional design and included secondary data from the ‘Cohort Study of Risk Factors for Non-Communicable Diseases’. The study was conducted on people aged ≥45 years at Kebon Kelapa village, West Java Province, Indonesia in 2017, and the total sample obtained for analysis was 349 respondents. Conclusion: The prevalence of HT in pre-elderly was higher than elderly. Pre-elderly and elderly in HT population had similar characteristics, such as low education level, overweight, no habit of smoking, not in stress condition, and doing moderate physical activity. Meanwhile sex characteristic showed different values. Factor of nutritional status and high physical activity had a strong relationship to the incidence of HT in pre-elderly and elderly population.
