Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency: A Review

Ashish Rao M, Kusalik Boppana, Nivedita .

Abstract

“Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency”, often known as EPI, is a condition diagnosed in gastroenterology that is defined by insufficient or inaccurate pancreatic fluid secretion as well as pancreatic lipase function. The clinical symptoms as well as metabolic variations that EPI might cause can sometimes lead to outcomes that put a person's life in jeopardy. EPI is common in a variety of conditions that are not related to the pancreas, in addition to those that involve the pancreas, when and it should be recognized and promptly treated. However, there are a variety of tests offered, and the most common ones for diagnosing EPI are indirect, non-invasive procedures such as monitoring the level of faecal elastase (FE). This review paper will cover the latest research on the prevalence, diagnostic methods, and treatment of EPI, emphasizing the central role of 'pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT)' in its management.
