Menstrual Blood Banking: A Future Need and Scope

Harpreet Kaur, Karuna Sharma

Abstract

Stem cells abundant in menstrual blood possess the capacity to develop and differentiate into various cell types. The regenerative capacity of these stem cells derived from menstrual blood is comparable to that observed in stem cells present in umbilical cord blood and bone marrow. Every healthy woman experiences menstruation on average once every 28 to 30 days from the time of menstruation till menopausal. Menstrual blood banking involves storing menstrual blood for cell therapy purposes. Since pluripotent stem cells can be extracted from this blood, it is regarded as the best waste product. Menstrual blood stem cell preservation is a form of genetic security for the stem. They have the potential to fight illnesses and develop new bodily components. Women's mortality rates could be greatly decreased by menstrual blood stem cells. Meaning both volunteers and the recipients may benefit from menstrual blood stem cell therapy. The latest innovative locating that menstrual blood contains proliferative stem cells with the ability to differentiate into different cell types, including cardiac cells, neural cells, and nearly nine different types of tissues, including the heart, liver, and lung, has opened up a new area for therapeutic treatment. Many studies on the topic have been made possible since it is simple to acquire stem cells from menstruation blood and umbilical cord blood. Additionally, because they are immunologically young and have the capacity to differentiate into a variety of cell types, the stem cells from these sources may encourage cell survival rather than aid in cell replacement, which occurs following cell transplantation. Stem cells derived from menstrual blood, which are accessible on a monthly basis in women of reproductive age, offer the added advantage of being more straightforward to gather compared to human umbilical cord blood cells, which are only obtainable during childbirth.
